Main Outpatient clinics restart at St. Mary’s Hospital
From Monday 3 August – outpatients’ clinics will resume within the Main Outpatients Department at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Main Outpatients is still located in the North hospital however some changes have been made and extra safety measures have been introduced to keep patients and staff as safe as possible.
Access to the Main Outpatient Department is now via a new entrance which is located off the North carpark, where there will be a pick up and drop off area.
The new entrance has a one way system in place with a separate exit to ensure social distancing measures can be maintained.
Hand washing facilities and hand sanitiser is available on arrival and in all waiting areas.
Screens are in place at the Reception desk to give added protection and the area will undergo enhanced cleaning.
Changes have been made to the seating within the main waiting area and sub wait areas to ensure patients are sat at least 2 metres apart.
When attending your appointment:
- Bring a face covering with you which should be worn at all times in line with national guidance
- Wash or sanitise your hands on arrival and when leaving the building
- Arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before your appointment time
- Report to Main Outpatients Reception as normal
- Attend unaccompanied unless a chaperone is required
If you or anyone in your household has experienced symptoms of coronavirus in the last 14 days, please do not attend your appointment. If you are unsure please phone the number on your appointment letter.
Video consultations such as ‘Attend Anywhere’, which is a secure video call service for patients with pre-arranged appointment times, are being held where possible to enable clinical staff to have face to face contact with patients without them having to leave their homes.
When your child is ill or injured it is very difﬁcult to decide if/when to call your child’s GP, NHS 111, or go the Accident and Emergency Department (A&E). While the government is asking everyone to stay at home, it can be confusing to know what to do.
Here is some Guidance around what to do if your child is unwell
Due to the current situation regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19) GP Surgeries are now running a Telephone Triage service. Please do not walk in to the surgery. If you need an appointment you will need to call the surgery to receive a phone call from the GP or a Nurse Practitioner first.
Many consultations are taking place over the telephone. A small number of patients may be invited into the surgery, but this will be kept to a minimum.
You may still be able to register for online services by telephoning your GP Practice.
Emergency and routine dental care
The government has advised all dental practices that they will be able to open from the 8th June, but only if they have the necessary safety systems in place. Not all dental practices on the Isle of Wight will be able to open on the 8th June as they may need longer to obtain the PPE, specialist face masks and safety equipment that they need to protect themselves and patients.
Even when dental practices re-open, they will prioritise emergency care, so routine appointments may not be available for some time.
We have been informed that the two emergency dental hubs on the Island will carry on treating people who require emergency dental care. They will be able to support people who require emergency treatment and whose dental practice is not open yet, but people must be referred via a dental practice. They will also be available to take referrals from dental practices that are open, but who are unable to provide aerosol generating procedures.
Sexual Health Services
In order to respond as a service to COVID-19, Sexual Health have temporarily suspended their normal appointment booking procedure. This includes closing the online booking system. Please call 0300 300 2016 if you feel you need to be seen. You will be contacted by a member of our clinical team and assessed by phone. If the service cannot help you over the phone you will be allocated a time to attend clinic. Where possible we encourage the use of our Online Test Kit service, as well as access to information on Sexual Health.

Due to the Coronavirus and in line with current Government advice, regular hearing aid maintenance drop in clinics across the Island are suspended at present.
Support for clients is continuing by:
- posting out batteries/tubing
- giving information on how to clean, maintain and get the best from your hearing aids
- giving information on managing hearing loss
